This is the first “intelligent” hydrogen fuel cell: an advance in mobility. A lightweight hydrogen fuel cell of 157kW production power has been developed by Intelligent Energy that can generate power for a clean power technology company. The brand defined it in its presentation as a “commercially-viable, turnkey solution”, something we believe is promising for the sector.

The power density of that fuel-cell system is also innovating, and it is striking that it can still generate 157kW in a lightweight hydrogen fuel cell product. It’s what we see as a proposal to outperform EVs, with even better fuel, that needs, yes, a more ambitious and accessible network of hydrogen filling stations

Bill Gates hooked on this hydrogen fuel and solid carbon startup

Bill Gates recently visited a climate tech startup in the Seattle area called Modern Hydrogen, which is focused on the production of hydrogen fuel and solid carbon. 

The company developed a device that breaks down natural gas molecules to produce hydrogen fuel and solid carbon. Those products each have applications for lowering greenhouse gas emissions. H2 can be used as a carbon emission-free fuel, and solid carbon has a number of different industrial applications, including the aforementioned asphalt.

U.S. DOE Funding Selections for Clean Hydrogen Electrolysis, Manufacturing, and Recycling Activities under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

On March 13, 2024, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $750 million in funding for 52 projects across 24 states to dramatically reduce the cost of clean hydrogen and reinforce American leadership in the growing hydrogen industry. These projects will advance electrolysis technologies and improve manufacturing and recycling capabilities for clean hydrogen systems and components.

This announcement authorizes $1 billion for research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) activities to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen produced via electrolysis and $500 million for research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of improved processes and technologies for manufacturing and recycling clean hydrogen systems and materials.

DOE announces $3.2 million in vouchers to advance hydrogen businesses and products

Hydrogen-related selections are part of a larger $9.8 million in support for 111 small businesses and organizations nationwide to advance the clean energy economy.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced the selection of 31 entities to receive $3.2 million in voucher support to advance a range of clean hydrogen technologies. This announcement is part of larger rollout of $9.8 million presented to 111 small businesses and other organizations. DOE-funded vouchers will be used to obtain in-kind support from participating organizations.

NORTHEAST OHIO STARTUP FLYING HIGH WITH DEFENSE CONTRACT FOR LIQUID-HYDROGEN FUELED DRONES

Seven years toiling in a Lorain County Airport hangar has paid off for small business owner Mark Haberbusch, whose company has landed a multimillion-dollar defense contract to pursue liquid hydrogen-powered flight for drones.

Haberbusch’s company, NEOEx Systems, Inc, was awarded a $6.4 million subcontract earlier this year to develop systems that fuel and fly drones for the Army. NEOEx is developing a portable refueling station that delivers liquid hydrogen to drones weighing up to 55 pounds. Those drones, outfitted with NEOEx’s on-board storage and power system, can fly up to 20 hours and 1,000 miles.

The Next Diesel? GM and Honda Start U.S. Production of Hydrogen Fuel Cells

The fuel cells will find homes in the Honda CR-V, heavy-duty trucks, construction and mining equipment, and power generators.

Hydrogen will likely remain a niche technology among cars, pickups, and SUVs, but like diesel has been an alternative to gas, Hydrogen still stands a decent chance of becoming the fuel of choice for long-distance trucking, heavy-duty work, and power generation in a zero-carbon-emissions future.
